Microsoft Word 2010 Word Count |
'Word Count' feature gives statistics about the total no. of words, characters and spaces in a word document or selected text. This feature is same in Microsoft word 2007 and Microsoft word 2010.
Word Count Selected text
Step 1
Select some text, by pressing left mouse button and dragging cursor over the text.

Selected text will become highlighted.

Step 2
Click word count option in the ribbon under Review tab.

Count Result
Result will be displayed as follows.

The above selected text
had 4 words, 16 characters(alphabets or numbers) and 3 spaces. Total lines were 1.
NOTE: Total lines include blank lines also.
Microsoft Word Count Whole Document
If no text is selected and the word count option
is clicked, word will give statistics for the whole document.
For example- below is the result for a word 2010 document spanning 4 pages.

NOTE- Characters include letters, numbers, symbols, punctuations etc.
Live Word Count
A simple word count also appears Live as you type in Microsoft Word. It appears in the status bar at the bottom of Word Interface.

How to Turn On Live Word count
By default this option is On. However if it goes missing, you can turn it on by
- Right clik in the Status Bar
- A Customize status bar menu will appear. Click the option Word count and a check will appear besides it.
